“UNITED CHURCH CLUB 7 GROUP EXPLAINS THEIR PAPER RECYCLING TO AYLMER COUNCIL”

(Info supplied by Keith Hunt, leader of St Pauls United Church Club 7 (teen boys). The club collects newspapers every second month in town)

“A delegation from Club 7 was invited to Council meeting Jan. 18 to discuss our paper recycling program. We noted that Club 7 had been recycling newspapers for at least 50 years. A year end summary for 2009 showed the club had collected 95 tons of paper. We are currently receiving $70/ton. A list of donations was also presented to council. We stated that the Town of Aylmer is paying $120/ton to have recyclables picked up in the blue box program. Club 7 has saved the taxpayers of Aylmer approximately $100,000 since the blue box program was initiated 10 years ago. We asked council to support our paper drives and help us promote them. Mayor Habkirk stated that municipalities were preparing a plan to collect their recyclables and sell them for market value and there fore they would not be interested in promoting any other organizations which would compete for these materials. He thought this new facility might be operational in 2 to 3 years. Members of council congratulated Club 7 members for their good work.”
