“SPITS WIN SAT.; GAME 7 IN NEW HAMBURG TONITE” (Report by Gus Lagrandeur)
Aylmer -Captain Adam Vandepoele was not about to end his Junior C career with a loss on home ice. With his Aylmer Spitfires down three games to two and game six tied 2-2 late in the third period, Adam scored his second goal of the game with 44 seconds left to force a game seven in the series.
Aylmer had their backs forced against the wall with a disappointing 5-2 game five loss Friday night in New Hamburg. A quick start was called for and the Spitfires answered the call as they dominated early in this contest. Scoring twice in the first period and at one point out shooting the Firebirds 9-0, Aylmer looked to have the right formula for a win.
The Spits may have found the key to beating Corey Moore in the New Hamburg goal. Curtis Roloson was parked in front of the goal and banged home a rebound by Moore and then Vandepoele scored his first of the night on another rebound for a 2-0 Spits lead after one.
The Firebirds scored a short-handed goal and then followed it up with a power play goal to tie the game after two periods of play.
With the possibility of playing their last twenty minutes of hockey this year, the Spitfires limited the Firebirds scoring chances in the third period. Strong defensive play from Derek McTaggart, Brandon Rohrer, Cassidy North, and Adam Brisson kept the ‘Birds at bay and Brandon Rohrer was solid in goal all night long.
As time ticked away in the period with overtime looming again, Spits threw out the top line to try end the game in regulation. The puck was deep into Firebird territory and Adam Vandepoele, just on the ice from a line change deked by a defender, and went to the high slot area.
A pass from Curtis Roloson and a quick one-timer snap shot from Adam found the lower left corner sending the nice crowd into a frenzy as Aylmer went on to win 3-2.
Game 7 is set for Monday February 15 in New Hamburg with the puck set to drop at 7:30.
