“AYLMER RETAINS  AUDUBON CERTIFICATION”

(Info provided by Thom Polland, Aylmer Parks. The site, in Rotary Park,  was initially certified by Audubon International in 2006 and has been recertified in 2008 and 2010. Last week Council was informed of the renewal.)

“To maintain certification you must demonstrate a strong environmental program, through the creation of no mow zones, wild life habitat, limited or no use of pesticides or herbicides. Integrated pest management works well in our park as our pest and  predator populations remain in balance through the natural processes. Rotary Park was a perfect fit for the eight criteria to become certified; we have installed bat boxes, blue birdhouses, purple martin houses, and annually we put out butterfly boxes.  The flowerbed has been designed to sustain the butterfly from the caterpillar to maturation of the adult butterfly. The park and the awards we have won are a reflection of our communities support for environmental stewardship. We are the only municipal park in Ontario certified and second in Canada.”
